Using The Best WordPress Translation Plugin To Go Multilingual

Searching for the best WordPress translation plugin to create a multilingual WordPress site?

With almost 75% of the Internet’s 4,159,440,684+ users speaking a language other than English, going multilingual is essential to help you reach as big an audience as possible.

Creating a multilingual website might sound intimidating, but with the best WordPress translation plugin in tow, you’ll be able to create a working multilingual website with just a few minutes of work.

In this post, we’ll share more about the benefits of translating WordPress. Then, we’ll teach you how to use Weglot, the best WordPress translation plugin, to translate your website. This method will work with all the Anariel Design themes – we’ll use the Zeko non-profit theme to prove it!

The Benefits Of Translating Your WordPress Site

There are two big reasons to go multilingual. A multilingual site helps you:

  • Offer a better experience for your site’s existing visitors.
  • Reach new visitors in Google.

Let’s start with that first point – user experience.

As you’d expect, the vast majority of people prefer to browse websites in their own native languages whenever possible. According to a Gallup survey commissioned by the European Commission, 90% of people always use their own language when available, and 45% of respondents simply won’t visit websites in languages other than their own.

Your site probably receives visits from people who speak different languages, so by going multilingual, you’re giving those people what they want.

If you want to see just how many of your site’s visitors speak a different language, just go into the Geo tab in the Google Analytics Audience report.

Beyond that, going multilingual can also help you get more traffic from search engines like Google.

See – people also search Google in their native languages, so translating your website lets you start ranking for the same types of queries you’re already ranking for but in a new language.

That means there’s a whole new pool of visitors that you can reach in Google.

How To Translate Your WordPress Site With Weglot

Ready to translate your site with the best WordPress translation plugin? Here’s how to get started with Weglot.

Step 1: Install And Activate The Weglot Plugin

The Weglot plugin is available for free at WordPress.org, where it has a 4.9-star rating on over 780 reviews (another reason why it’s the best WordPress translation plugin!).

To install and activate the plugin, go to Plugins → Add New and search for “Weglot”:

Step 2: Create Weglot Account And Copy API Key

Next up, head to the Weglot registration page and create your free Weglot account:

Once you sign up, Weglot will send you an activation email. After you click the link in that email, Weglot will open a page that contains your API Key:

Keep this API key handy because you’ll need it for the next step!

Step 3: Configure Default Weglot Settings And Add API Key

Next, head to your WordPress dashboard and click on the Weglot option in the sidebar. Then, paste the API key from the previous step into the API Key box.

Below that, you’ll also need to configure two other settings:

  • Original language – select the current language of your site.
  • Destination languages – choose one or more languages into which you want to translate your site.

As soon as you tap the Save Changes button, you have a working multilingual WordPress site that visitors can start enjoying.

Step 4: Modify The Language Switcher Button (Optional)

To help visitors choose their preferred languages, Weglot automatically adds a language switcher button in the bottom-right corner of your site:

If you’d like to change how the language switcher works, Weglot includes new settings in the Weglot area of your WordPress dashboard to help you change both its looks and placement.

Step 5: Manage Your Translations From The Weglot Interface

If you want to manually review and edit Weglot’s machine translations (or outsource them to a professional translator), you’ll do that from the Weglot cloud dashboard.

Weglot gives you two different ways to manage translations, which is another reason it’s the best WordPress translation plugin.

First, there’s the Visual Editor interface.

With this interface, you’ll see a live preview of your site. To edit any text on the page, you can hover over that text and click the green pencil icon:

That will open a popup where you’re able to edit that translation and see whether the translation has been reviewed by a human yet:

If you’d prefer to work in more of an abstract interface, Weglot also offers its Translations List editor.

With this interface, you’ll see a side-by-side list of the original text and its translated version.

You can use the search and filter options in the sidebar to find specific content. And this interface also lets you outsource translations to professional editors:

No matter which interface you use, Weglot will automatically sync any changes you make to your live WordPress site.
